What Makes Leather for Shoes So Special?

Genuine leather is a natural product – and every hide is unique. Its structure, grain pattern, and texture are shaped by natural influences. Small irregularities are therefore part of the material's character.

For shoes, leather offers a special combination of various properties: it is breathable, flexible, tear-resistant, and durable. At the same time, it can absorb moisture and release it later. This supports a pleasant climate inside the shoe.

Its adaptability also plays an important role. High-quality leather can, to a certain extent, conform to the foot when worn, contributing to a comfortable [shoe fit].

Why Is High-Quality Leather Particularly Durable?

Good shoe leather withstands mechanical stress while remaining flexible. The quality of the raw hide, its processing, and subsequent care are crucial for this.

At Sioux, particularly stressed areas of a shoe are made from suitable parts of the leather hide. For the most harmonious appearance possible, the components of a pair of shoes are also cut to match each other.

For leather shoes to remain attractive for a long time, they require regular [shoe care]. Sufficient breaks from wearing are also useful so that absorbed moisture can be released again.

Which Leather Is Used for a Shoe?

Depending on the area of use, leather must meet different requirements. Upper leather should be flexible, breathable, and yet robust. Lining leather lies directly against the foot and should therefore be particularly soft, supple, and abrasion-resistant.

How Does Sioux Select Its Shoe Leathers?

During selection, leather hides are carefully checked for processing, structure, and grain pattern. Sioux works with selected tanneries and suppliers whose materials meet defined quality requirements.

One example is the traditional tannery Oehler in the immediate vicinity of Sioux. The family business has been producing leather since 1823 and is one of the few remaining tanneries in Germany. For Sioux, they produce, among other things, hydrophobic suede. It acquires its water-repellent properties during the tanning process. This means the material absorbs less moisture from outside and dries faster.

The combination of artisanal experience, modern processing, and careful control is particularly important here. The [tanning of leather] also significantly influences how the finished material will feel, look, and be processed later.
