Your feet significantly change during your lifetime, it is a natural process. Have you ever noticed how newborn and infant’s feet are very bulky and unshapely in form? It is only once they start to learn how to walk upright that the arch of the foot fully stretches out over the tendons and muscles. A useful analogy to visualise this would be the way an umbrella spreads open when it is put up. The structure of the foot as we know it, angled at 90 degrees and with longitudinal and transverse arches, is ultimately acquired in man as a necessity when we learn to walk. The natural design of the foot means that this structure, including the length and width of our feet, remain quite stable thereafter, only changing with old age.
As it goes, exercising the muscular system in your feet is one way to ensure a relativity high stability of this complex part of the body. Unfortunately, however, a lot of our lifestyle choices counteract nature’s design. The two biggest conditions prevalent in our current society are too little movement and obesity. In addition to this, we have the tendency to wear shoes which are anatomically disadvantageous to our feet in Western society for fashion purposes. We have spoken at length about the disadvantages of high heels in this blog. It may be true that no other shoe carries as much sex appeal as high heels, however, it is also a fact that no other shoe manages to cause the feet so many adverse effects as a result of being worn. Thanks to such conditions prevalent in our society, along with improper footwear, many feet develop deformities such as splay-foot or flat foot. This effectively means that the feet widen – something that nature simply did not account for. It is natural for your feet to lower slightly in the second half of your life, and this is something that is unavoidable. The foot gets wider. Not to fear! Whichever width you need, we have fashionable and attractive footwear here at Sioux that will tick every box – most importantly, being healthy for your feet.
There is also another reason why your feet can widen. This is something we do not wish to keep a secret. It is a rather rare one. We spoke earlier about the Paracelsus principle, dosis facit venenum, “the dose makes the poison”. We now know: lots of recreational running (some would say too much recreational running) can also lead to wider feet. The experienced model designers here at Sioux were, of course, already familiar with this concept, however it is an area that we have become particularly involved in educating ourselves on. Had someone asked us whether regular running (jogging) could lead to the feet widening, we would not have been completely sure what the correct answer to give was. That is not the case any more. Our CEO was recently training for the Berlin marathon and therefore increased his monthly running amount to 80-100 km as a result. We recognised this as an opportunity to increase our understanding and our most experienced shoe model designer measured the CEO’s feet every month. As we predicted, the significant amount of time that he spent running on tarmac during this period had widened his feet from a G width to a H width within a few months. This is not a phenomenon which you will find detailed in any textbook and seems to be more of a rare occurrence (which has also been confirmed to us by orthopaedic surgeons). What was previously just hearsay can now be studied by our team right here at Sioux, which is why we are able to say that it is not only too little movement that often leads to misalignments, but also too much in some exceptional cases. We don’t wish to scare you off running completely – for the average body, the advice still stands that you should move as much as possible, and your body will thank you for it.
