THE FOOT – AN INTRODUCTION TO AN AMAZING AND COMPLEX PART OF THE BODY

    4.1/5 243

We will begin with the extraordinary anatomy of the human foot: did you know that almost 25% of all the bones in your body can be found in the feet? Every foot contains 26 bones, that is a total of 52 bones in both of your feet. You have a total of 206 bones in your whole body. That is an impressive number to have in such a small space! There are also 13 joints and many different cartilages and tendons.

The foot is a real all-rounder. The foot is embedded in a ball joint and can rotate and extend in all directions. On the one hand, it is able to support your entire body weight (and actually up to 300% more when jogging downhill), provide suspension and support and is crucial to your ability to walk from A to B. On the other hand, it can also master highly refined motor skills – something that many people do not notice. Try for yourself: pick up a coin or handkerchief with your foot. Or paint a picture using feet by placing a paint brush between your toes. These are both great exercises for your feet’s mobility, incidentally.

You will soon see: the foot is a real all-rounder, but in western societies it is often restricted from truly thriving, as walking barefoot is only rarely allowed – and this is what our feet are actually designed for. We only usually get the chance to do this in the few steps we take from the bathroom to the bedroom and back. Walking barefoot is the best thing you can possibly do for your feet.
